§ 10-31. Confinement.

Latest version.
  • When dogs, cats, or ferrets are involved in a bite to a human, regardless of vaccination status, they will be isolated by animal control for a period of ten days. Horses will be held for a 14-day isolation and observation period. Animal control has the authority to have such animal removed from the owner's property and placed under observation at the animal control facility or at a veterinary hospital. If the animal is currently vaccinated, it may be isolated and observed at home provided:

    (1)

    An animal control officer certifies the adequacy of the quarantine site;

    (2)

    The owner signs a quarantine responsibility statement; and

    (3)

    There is no record of noncompliance with animal control regulations.

    Vaccinated dogs, cats, ferrets, horses, cattle, and sheep which have been exposed to a known or suspected rabid animal must be given a booster vaccination upon entering a 45-day quarantine period.

    Unvaccinated dogs, cats, ferrets, horses, cattle, and sheep which have been exposed to a known or suspected rabid animal must be euthanized. If the owner desires to keep the animal, the animal must be placed in strict isolation for 180 days at the owner's expense in a facility approved by the county health department or designee.
